First Visits and General Care
Back to topWhat happens at a first dental visit?
Your dentist will ask about your concerns, dental history, medical history and goals. They may examine your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, and recommend X-rays where clinically appropriate. Your options, risks and costs will be discussed before treatment planning.
Do I need a dental check-up if nothing hurts?
Yes, dental problems can develop before pain starts. Regular check-ups can help identify tooth decay, gum disease, cracked teeth, calculus build-up and other concerns earlier.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Many patients attend every six months, but the right timing depends on your oral health, gum condition, risk of decay, medical history and previous dental treatment. Your dentist can recommend a suitable recall interval after assessment.
Children’s Dentistry and CDBS
Back to topWhen should children first see a dentist?
Children can benefit from early dental visits so they become familiar with the clinic and so growth, tooth eruption, brushing habits and diet can be discussed. If you are unsure when to book, call our team for guidance.
Do you see children at Relax Dental & Facial Care?
Yes. We provide children’s dental appointments for families in Blackburn North and nearby suburbs. Children’s visits can include check-ups, cleaning, oral hygiene advice, fissure sealants where suitable and CDBS appointments for eligible children.
What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or CDBS, is a Medicare program that may help eligible children access basic dental services. Eligibility and coverage are set by Medicare, and our team can help you understand how claiming works.
What if an adult tooth grows behind a baby tooth?
This can happen when an adult tooth erupts before the baby tooth has fallen out. Sometimes it resolves naturally, but a dental check-up is recommended if the baby tooth is not becoming loose, the adult tooth position looks unusual, or you are concerned.
How can I help my child if they feel nervous about the dentist?
Keep language positive and simple. Avoid words that may sound frightening. A calm first visit can help children become familiar with the dental chair, mirror and gentle explanations.
Dental Check-Ups, Cleaning and X-Rays
Back to topWhat is included in a dental check-up?
A dental check-up may include examination of the teeth, gums, bite, jaw, soft tissues and any areas of concern. Your dentist may also discuss cleaning, fluoride, X-rays or treatment planning depending on your needs.
What is the difference between plaque and calculus?
Plaque is a soft bacterial film that builds up on teeth. Calculus, also called tartar, is hardened plaque that cannot usually be removed by brushing alone. A scale and clean can help remove calculus build-up.
Why might I need dental X-rays?
X-rays may help your dentist assess areas that are not visible during a clinical examination, such as between teeth, under existing fillings, around roots or near wisdom teeth. X-rays are only recommended where clinically appropriate.
Will a scale and clean make my teeth whiter?
A scale and clean can remove plaque, calculus and some surface stains. It does not change the natural internal colour of teeth. If you want to discuss tooth colour, a whitening consultation may be more suitable.
What is fluoride used for?
Fluoride may be recommended to help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of decay, depending on your age, risk factors and oral health. Your dentist can explain whether fluoride is suitable for you or your child.
Toothache and Dental Emergencies
Back to topIs toothache a dental emergency?
Toothache can be urgent if pain is severe, worsening, affecting sleep, painful when biting, or linked with swelling, fever or bad taste. Call the clinic so our team can guide you on the next available appointment.
What should I do if I have facial swelling?

What is a dental abscess?
A dental abscess is a collection of infection that can occur around a tooth or gum. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bad taste, fever or a pimple-like swelling on the gum. Dental abscess symptoms should be assessed promptly.
What should I do for a broken or chipped tooth?
A broken, chipped or cracked tooth should be assessed, especially if there is pain, sensitivity, a sharp edge, exposed dentine or a change in your bite. Call the clinic to discuss the next available appointment.
Wisdom Teeth, Broken Teeth and Abscesses
Back to topCan wisdom tooth pain need urgent care?
Wisdom tooth pain may need assessment if there is swelling, difficulty opening, bad taste, fever, pain when biting or worsening symptoms. Your dentist can check the area and discuss suitable options.
Do you remove wisdom teeth?
Your dentist can assess wisdom teeth and discuss whether monitoring, treatment, referral or removal may be appropriate. Suitability depends on tooth position, symptoms, X-ray findings and individual risk factors.
What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
If an adult tooth is knocked out, seek urgent dental advice immediately. Hold the tooth by the crown, avoid scrubbing the root, and call the clinic. For serious injury, heavy bleeding or facial trauma, seek urgent medical care.
Gum Health, Plaque and Calculus
Back to topWhat are signs of gum disease?
Signs may include bleeding gums, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth or tenderness when brushing. A dental check-up can help assess your gums and explain suitable care.
Why do my gums bleed when brushing?
Bleeding gums can occur from plaque build-up, gum inflammation, brushing technique, medication or other factors. If bleeding continues, book a dental check-up so your gums can be assessed.
Can mouth breathing affect oral health?
Mouth breathing may contribute to dry mouth, gum irritation, bad breath and changes in oral comfort. In children, it may also be worth discussing with a dentist or GP if it is frequent.
Teeth Grinding and Night Guards
Back to topWhat are signs of teeth grinding or bruxism?
Signs can include worn teeth, jaw discomfort, headaches, tooth sensitivity, cracked teeth or waking with tight jaw muscles. Your dentist can check for wear patterns and discuss whether a night guard may be suitable.
What is a dental night guard?
A dental night guard is a custom-made appliance that may be recommended to help protect teeth from grinding or clenching forces. Suitability depends on your bite, symptoms and dental assessment.
Can grinding damage teeth?

Back to topDo you offer teeth whitening?
Yes, we offer teeth whitening consultations. Your dentist can assess tooth colour, sensitivity, existing dental work and suitability before discussing whitening options.
Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?
No. Suitability depends on tooth condition, existing fillings or crowns, sensitivity, gum health and the cause of discolouration. Your dentist can assess and explain appropriate options.
Do you offer dental implants?
Yes, dental implant consultations are available. Your dentist can assess your missing tooth area, oral health, X-rays or scans, bone and gum considerations, and discuss whether implants or other options may be suitable.
Are dental implants suitable for everyone?
