First steps after a tooth chips or breaks
If a tooth chips or breaks, rinse gently with water and avoid chewing on that side. If you have the broken piece, keep it and bring it to the appointment. If there is bleeding from the lip or gum, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze.
Call a dentist to describe what happened. Even a small chip can expose rough edges, dentine or cracks that should be assessed.
When to call urgently
Call promptly if the tooth is painful, sensitive to cold, sharp, loose, bleeding, cracked deeply or broken after trauma. Seek urgent medical care if there is facial injury, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness or significant swelling.
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out completely, urgent dental advice is needed immediately.
Treatment options vary
Treatment depends on the size and location of the break, tooth health and symptoms. Options may include smoothing a small rough edge, bonding, a filling, crown, root canal treatment, extraction where the tooth cannot be saved, or referral.
Your dentist can explain what is suitable after examination and, where needed, X-rays.
Preventing future chips
If chips are linked to grinding, sports, large fillings or bite pressure, your dentist may discuss preventive options such as a custom mouthguard or night guard where suitable.
