Common reasons wisdom teeth become painful
Wisdom teeth often erupt at the back of the mouth where cleaning can be difficult. Pain may come from pressure, gum inflammation around a partly erupted tooth, decay in the wisdom tooth or neighbouring tooth, or infection around the gum.
The same symptom can have different causes, so a dentist needs to examine the area before recommending care. X-rays may be suggested to check tooth position, roots and nearby structures.
Symptoms that should be assessed promptly
Call a dentist if wisdom tooth pain is getting worse, if you notice swelling, bad taste, difficulty opening, pain when swallowing, pus, fever or a sore jaw. These signs may indicate infection or inflammation that needs timely assessment.
If you have facial swelling, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or symptoms spreading quickly, seek urgent medical care or call emergency services.
What may happen at the appointment
Your dentist will ask about your symptoms, examine the gums and teeth, and may recommend an X-ray. Treatment options vary. Some patients need cleaning and home-care advice, some may need medication or review, and some may be referred or planned for removal where clinically appropriate.

While waiting for your visit
Keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Warm salt water rinses may help some patients with mild gum irritation, but they do not replace dental care. Avoid placing aspirin or other substances directly on the gum, as this can irritate tissues.
Call early in the day if symptoms are urgent, especially before weekends or public holidays.
