Why is drinking water good for my teeth?

With experts recommending to drink at least 8 glasses of water today, it is important to know what is so good about drinking water. Water makes up about 60% of human bodies, thus keeping hydrated helps the functioning of bodily systems, such as distributing nutrients, removal of waste and keeping your muscles moving. But let’s talk about our oral health. There are many benefits of drinking water for our teeth. These include:

  • Strengthening teeth: Drinking water with fluoride is one of the easiest ways to help your teeth. Once in your enamel, fluoride works with calcium and phosphate to create your teeths defense coating. This makes your teeth stronger and more resistant to decay.

  • Keeping your mouth clean: Drinking water helps to wash away food residue throughout the day. Sugars left in your mouth in combination with the naturally existing bacteria can form an acid which attacks enamel. Thus, by drinking water it can help to dilute the harmful acid and protect your teeth from damage.

  • Lowers risk of dry mouth: Drinking water helps to create more saliva which will protect against dry mouth

  • Fights against bad breath: This relates to all the above benefits as drinking washes away the food particles that can contribute to bad breath
