Why should I brush my tongue?

While widely known recommendations regarding oral health often mention brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day, there is often limited mention of our tongues. Unlike teeth and gums, our tongues have a rough and uneven surface. Due to the peaks and troughs on our tongues, this creates lots of spaces for bacteria to grow. As it grows, this bacteria can transfer to your teeth, leading to risk of tooth decay or possibly contributing to bad breath. In fact, the bacteria on your tongue is one of the top causes of bad breath.

So how do we do it? We should aim to brush our tongues everytime we clean our teeth. Making sure not to overbrush, use side to side and back and forth movements when cleaning your tongue. Make sure to clean the sides of your tongue as well and when complete rinse well with water.
