A Balanced Diet towards Oral health

August 8, 2018

You can never go wrong with having a balanced diet! What we consume everyday affects our overall health. Our oral health is no exception. Your diet plays a fundamental role in whether or not you you develop tooth decay.

To ensure that your diet doesn’t negatively affect your oral health, here a few tips:

  • Drink lots of water

It is recommended to drink 2-3 Litres of water a day to aid in your overall health. Most areas in Australia also have fluoridated water. Fluoride is extremely beneficial to your oral health in fighting off bacteria and protect against tooth decay.

  • Limit sugar

Treating yourself every once in a while is a normal part of life, however in your everyday life it is wise to limit your sugar intake. Sugar can be hidden in different foods such as biscuits or even dried food. Hence, it is important to be conscious of what you are eating and the amount of sugar in it. High levels of sugar in your diet can cause acid attacks on your tooth enamel.

  • Chewing gum

Studies have shown that chewing gum for 20 minutes after eating can prompt greater saliva production. This helps to neutralise acid attacks which can otherwise cause tooth decay.
