Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a treatment offered by dentists which lightens and helps to remove stains and discolouration from your teeth. This helps to improve the overall appearance of your teeth and smile. Common causes of stained teeth are drinking dark coloured liquids such as coffee or tea, as well as tobacco use or lack of dental care.
Prior to doing a teeth whitening treatment it is important to have your teeth cleaned by your dentist. This works to remove the film of bacteria, food and other substances built up on your teeth which has contributed to the staining.
There are two main methods of teeth whitening treatments. These are the take home kits and the in-office whitening options. In-office whitening procedures are the fastest way to change the colour of your teeth as more powerful whitening gels regulated by the dentist are used. This option is usually done within one and a half hours and results can be seen immediately.
Take-home whitening methods can be done in the comfort of your own home. This process begins by having your dentist make impressions of your upper and lower teeth. These moulds are then sent off to qualified dental lab technicians to create custom- made trays for your teeth. At home, these are filled with whitening gel provided by your dentist. This option may be more convenient for some as you are in control of when you want to complete the treatment and how often.
