What happens during a dental check-up
A dental check-up is an assessment of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, bite and oral health risks. Your dentist may ask about symptoms, medical history, dental history, diet, brushing habits and any concerns you have.
The aim is to identify problems early, explain findings clearly and help you understand your options before treatment planning.
What a scale and clean does
A scale and clean removes plaque, calculus and stains from tooth surfaces, especially areas that are hard to clean at home. It may be followed by polishing and fluoride where suitable.
Cleaning recommendations vary between patients. Someone with gum inflammation, heavy calculus or higher decay risk may need a different plan from someone with very healthy gums.
When X-rays may be recommended
X-rays may be recommended to check for decay between teeth, bone levels, infection, tooth position, large fillings or concerns that cannot be seen during the visual examination. Your dentist should explain why an X-ray is suggested.
Not every visit requires X-rays. Timing depends on your age, dental history, symptoms and risk level.
Gentle visits for nervous patients and families
If you feel nervous, let the team know. We can keep explanations calm, pause when needed and talk through each step. Families can also book children’s check-ups to build positive routines early.
