How to make your denture more comfortable

Whether it be wearing a denture for the first time or getting a new one, it can take some time for your mouth to get used to. Your gums may feel sore in the beginning as your mouth adjusts to the new appliance, but this should subside shortly. Our dentists understand the importance of having a comfortable and well fitting denture as they shouldn’t impact any part of your lifestyle. As a result, we have curated some of our top tips for making your dentures comfortable.

1. Be patient

The time taken to get used to your new dentures varies greatly across individuals. For some they are able to adjust to them immediately, whereas for others it can take a few months. While getting used to the new appliance, it is normal to feel some discomfort or have some slight difficulties when speaking. However, with time your jaw and gums should adjust to the denture and become more and more comfortable to wear.

2. Use a dental adhesive

Dental adhesives such as Polident can help make getting used to your new dentures a quicker process. This helps to form a seal between your dentures and gums to prevent food from getting stuck in between. This is particularly useful when eating, speaking and smiling, which mean limited adjustments to your daily lifestyle.

3. Clean your denture

Daily care will help improve the longevity of your appliance. Just like teeth, dentures require daily cleaning to remove bacteria and any buildup of food particles. However, this should not be done with toothpaste. Instead, it is recommended to use special denture cleaning products and solutions. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the most effective results.

4. Schedule in regular appointments at the dentist

Attending regular checkups at the dentist will ensure that your denture fits correctly and that any necessary adjustments can be made. Additionally, during this time the dentist can help remove plaque and tartar that can build up on your denture over time.
