Can muscle relaxant injections stop bruxism?

Bruxism, also known as Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), is the involuntary grinding and clenching of your teeth. Most people are unaware that they grind their teeth as it typically occurs when they are asleep and are only made aware of it by their partner or parent who may hear it happening. While symptoms of teeth grinding are limited, some advanced symptoms may include jaw pain, headaches or tooth sensitivity.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a complex set of conditions characterised by pain and dysfunction. This results from problems with the jaw, jaw joint and/or the facial muscles around. Factors contributing to TMD include:

  • Jaw and neck injuries (e.g. whiplash)

  • Arthritis in the TMJ

  • Stress

  • Sleep disorders and breathing difficulties

So where does Botulinum toxin fit into this picture? Well firstly, ‘Botox’ is actually just a brand name! This medication has sterile, pharmaceutical-grade proteins that target muscle contractions. When injected into the jaw muscles, the medication will reduce the tension on the muscles and surrounding tissues, providing relief of symptoms and a great reduction in teeth grinding. This treatment is favorable as it is reversible, temporary and minimally invasive for the patient.
