Composite vs Porcelain Veneers

Ever wondered how Hollywood actors or actresses achieve their perfect star studded smile? Their secret is found in a cosmetic dentistry tool called veneers. This thin piece of porcelain can do wonders for your teeth, fixing a range of issues from enhancing the brightness of one's teeth or straightening a smile to closing tooth gaps and correcting fractures or chips. Bear in mind however that the procedure is irreversible and much thought and research should be undertaken before following through with a big decision like this.

Composite vs Porcelain

There are two main type of veneers—i.e., composite and porcelain. Each come with their own advantages and disadvantages.

For starters, porcelain veneers are very durable and can last for many years (usually 10-15 years). The best part is that they look very life-like and natural due to the translucent properties of the porcelain. Porcelain veneers are also more stain resistant because unlike other cosmetic dental bonding materials, porcelain is a smooth, impervious ceramic and therefore will not pick up permanent stain from cigarette smoking or from dark coloured liquid. Unfortunately, if they crack or chip, the whole veneer must be replaced. Porcelain veneers need to be made in a lab and can take a couple of weeks to complete.

On the other hand, composite resin veneers can be added to your existing teeth in one visit. Any chips or cracks to composite resin veneers can be repaired and cost less than porcelain veneers, making them more affordable. However, composite veneers are not as durable as porcelain veneers and more maintenance is required as they are more prone to chipping.

Additionally, they tend to stain more easily and you might consider this especially if, for example you smoke or drink coffee regularly. This is because composite is a porous resin.

Maintaining your new pearly whites

The dentist will recommend brushing and flossing regularly just as you would your normal teeth. Adequate brushing daily and use of non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste is good for preventing stains. Perhaps consider limiting coffee and other stain-inducing foods as well.

Take note that veneers will need to be replaced at some point, regardless of how well you take good care of them. Nevertheless, practicing oral hygiene will help them last as long as possible.
