How often do you need a new toothbrush?

Knowing when to change your toothbrush can be difficult to judge. This all depends on how you use it and your personal preference. Typically, it is recommended to replace toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months. However, there are many factors which can determine when it is time for a change. For instance, you may consider getting a new toothbrush sooner if you have been sick. A simple way to tell if it is time for a change is to look at the bristles. If the bristles are frayed the brush won’t be as effective in cleaning your teeth. Thus, being a clear sign to change your brush. Children are also known to brush their teeth more rigorously than adults. As a result, they may need to replace their toothbrushes more frequently.

There are also things you should do to maintain your toothbrush. This includes:

  • Keeping it clean: Rinse your toothbrush under tap water after every use to remove lingering toothpaste and saliva

  • Storing your toothbrush: Avoid storing your toothbrush in a closed container as this can cause bacteria to build up. Instead, store it in a vertical position to allow the bristles to airy dry. If your toothbrush is stored in a container with other brushes, try not to let the heads touch each other

  • Sharing is not caring: Whilst sharing is caring, this motto does not apply to your toothbrush. The bacteria in your mouth is unique to you. Thus, sharing a toothbrush with others introduces new bacteria into your mouth, This can increase risk of catching a cold or other germs.
