How to fix bad breath!

Bad breath is also known as Halitosis and is a hygiene issue nobody wants to have, but most of us can get now and then. The cause of bad breath is bad bacteria. This can be from food that gets trapped between the teeth which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Foods with strong odor can also cause bad odor.

Learn how to cure bad breath by following these simple tips:

1. Check your brushing

Everyone knows to brush their teeth twice a day, but how well are doing it each time? This is what really matters. Experts recommend brushing for a minimum of 2 minutes each time, using circular motions and a soft bristled brush. Effective brushing removes build up from the food you eat and bacteria in your mouth. It is also important to brush your tongue. The tongue is also a breeding ground for bacteria, dead cells and food debris. Build up of this can cause bad breath!

2. Limit coffee intake

Coffee can cause bad breath due to its has a naturally strong odor. It is also high in sulfur and limits saliva production. If you are noticing a persistently bad breath, try to limit your coffee to once or twice a day.

3. Floss often

A great proportion of your teeth surfaces lie between your teeth. Therefore, it is important to floss at least once a day to remove any bacteria between these surfaces.

4. Chew sugarless gum

Chewing gum after you eat stimulates saliva production. This will help wash away bacteria and food debris after you eat.

5. Regular dental appointments

Experts recommend to see your dentist every 6 months to ensure optimal health of your teeth.

6.Change your toothbrush

A good toothbrush will only last around three months, if you use it for longer the bristles become frayed and won’t clean your teeth effectively. This will allow plaque and bacteria to build up in your mouth and gums.

7. Drink water

The human body is 50-65% water, therefore staying hydrated is very important. What you may not know is that saliva is 99.5% water, therefore being dehydrated can thicken your saliva. This can disrupt the breaking down of food and neutralising bacteria acid in your mouth. Ensuring that you drink the recommended 2-3L of water a day will help to prevent tooth decay and bad breath
