Fluoride

Tooth decay is a common health problem that people of all ages often face. Thankfully, there are many ways to protect your teeth! One of these is Fluoride. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral which is known for its dental benefits. The use of fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth, improving their ability to fight off bacterial acid. This slows down the growth of plaque and protects the teeth against decay.

There are two main forms of Fluoride, being Systemic and Topical available.

Systemic fluoride are ones which are swallowed. Most popularly is fluoridated water. Another example is dietary fluoride supplements.

Alternatively, Topical Fluoride are ones which are applied directly onto the surface of the teeth. This includes, fluoride toothpastes, mouthwashes as well as treatments available at the dentists. Mouthwashes such as Neutrafluor can be used daily or as prescribed by your dentist. Professional Fluoride treatments are recommended as part of our 6 month checkup and clean appointments. This treatment only takes a few minutes and can come in a gel, foam or varnish form. After the treatment you may be asked not to eat or drink for 30 minutes to allow your teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair any traces of microscopic plaque.

The addition of fluoride in your oral health care routine can really make a difference. So book in with one of our dentists at Relax Dental and Facial Care today and find out more about how fluoride can protect your teeth!
